Soviet Military Maps is an offroad navigation app that offers worldwide topographic maps, primarily sourced from the Russian General Staff. For many countries in Africa and Asia, these maps are considered to be the best available topomaps.

The app provides various map layers, including topomaps worldwide (mainly at a scale of 1:100,000), ROSREESTR The Federal Service for State Registration, Cadastre and Cartography, Google Maps (satellite images, road and terrain map), Open Street Maps (OSM Mapnik, Osmarender, and Cloudemade Cyclemap), Bing Maps, and ESRI Maps.

Similar to Garmin or Magellan GPS handhelds, this app offers similar mapping options. It has features specifically designed for outdoor navigation, such as creating and editing waypoints, GoTo-Waypoint-Navigation, track recording with speed and elevation profile, a tripmaster with fields for odometer, average speed, bearing, elevation, etc. It also supports GPX and KML file import, search functionality for placenames, points of interest (POIs), and streets. The Map View and Tripmaster can be customized with data fields like speed, distance, compass, etc. Additionally, the app allows bulk download of map tiles for offline usage and imports Oziexplorer map format in OZF2 OZFX3 extension as well as OpenStreetMaps in vector format (features not available in the free version). It also supports waypoint and track sharing via email or Facebook.

Soviet Military Maps is the perfect moving map app for offroad trips, adventure travels, and expeditions. Whether you are planning a cross country trip to the Sahara desert or a trekking tour to the Himalayas, Russian topos can be a great alternative to other map sources. In addition to good topography, these maps include many small trails and unpaved roads that may be missing in other map sets. The Russian maps also have additional English labels.

Please note that the Soviet Military Maps were primarily created in the 80s and may not be as useful for industrialized countries. Outside of Africa and Asia, the OSM / Google map layers are more recommended.

It is important to note that this app does not provide direct "turn-by-turn" navigation. However, users can easily switch to Google Navigation with a selected waypoint.

The free version of the app has some limitations, including the presence of ads, a maximum of 3 waypoints and tracks, no import of waypoints and tracks, no bulkdownload, no local city database for offline search, and no hillshading overlay.
